Guided Thorsmork Glacier Valley Hiking Tour Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive and Bus from Reykjavik to Þórsmörk
Your journey begins early this morning by boarding the highland bus from BSI bus terminal which will drive the group all the way to the beautiful glacier valley of Þórsmörk. On the route you will pass by the picturesque villages of Selfoss, Hella and Hvolsvöllur.
On arrival at the Langidalur hut, you’ll settle in here, where you’ll lodge for the next 3 nights. After lunch, the first hike kicks off with a crossing of the hiking bridge over the Krossá river and an exploration of Tröllakirkja (church of trolls) – a unique rock formation with a small cave underneath. Next, you’ll hike either into the beautiful Hvannárgil valley or up to Mt. Réttarfell. Return to our hut in time to prepare dinner.
Overnight Location: Langidalur Hut
Distance: 3-4 hours, 5-8 km, 400 m of ascent, 400 m of descent
Meals: Lunch, dinner
Day 2 Climb to the Fimmvörðuhál Pass
Rise ready for another day of incredible hiking as you set out following breakfast to climb up the hills leading to the pass of Fimmvörðuháls, walking along the Kattarhryggir ridges with views over the impressive mountain of Útigönguhöfði up to Morinsheiði heath.
At the end of the Morinsheiði plateau, you will enjoy the view of the lava stream that flowed down from the Fimmvörðuháls volcano in March and early April 2010. As the group gains height above Morinsheiði, you’ll reach the lava field and the two craters Magni and Móði that erupted prior to the main Eyjafjallajökull crater.
It’s then time to head back to Þórsmörk with the magnificent view over the glaciers and this beautiful valley for dinner and overnnight in the Langidalur Hut.

Distance: 7 hours, 18 km, 1000m of ascent, 1000m of descent

Day 3 Hike the Þórsmörk Tindfjöll Circle
Today you’ll hike a scenic trail with an extraordinary view over Goðaland, the glaciers and the inner part of Þórsmörk. With your group and guide, you’ll proceed into the Slyppugil valley and towards Tindfjallagil where you’ll find a unique rock formation with a small cave underneath, called Tröllakirkja (the church of the trolls).
You will also have the chance to climb Mt Rjúpnafell, eading down afterwards following the banks of Krossá river which will bring you back to the hut for a delicious barbeque feast for your final night!
Overnight Location: Langidalur Hut
Distance: 4-7 hours, 14-16 km, 450 of ascent, 450 m of descent
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 4 Final Hike and Return Bus to Reykjavik
The group will spend the morning in Þórsmörk and climb up the small mountain of Valahnúkur and enjoy its breath-taking views over the surrounding landscape. From there, a descent to the cave Sönghellir (Song cave) and to Húsadalur.
It’s then time to head back to Langidalur from where you’ll board the afternoon bus to Reykjavík. Arrival at Reykjavik BSI bus terminal at 19:20 where your 4-day trekking tour in Iceland concludes.

This tour is based in traditional mountain huts. The huts are basic but do provide running water, flushable toilets or outhouses, and fully-equipped kitchens. You can choose to bring your own sleeping bag or rent one from the tour company. The huts are divided into dormitories with single and twin beds.
