Northern Sumatra Tour Itinerary
Day 1 Arrival in Medan
On arrival in Medan, you will be met at the airport – your adventure starts immediately as you head to Bukit Lawang. This small village around 90km northwest of Medan is situated along the Bohorok River and is the gateway to the Gunung Leuser National Park.
Note: If arrival in Medan later than 14.00 pm, the program will be changed to a 1-night stay in Medan upon arrival with departure to Bukit Lawang the following day.

Day 2 Spot Wildlife and Explore the Tropical Rainforest on a Jungle Walk
This morning you’ll be picked up at your hotel before setting out on a peaceful walk along the riverside. A short hike up to visit the central viewing area will follow, where if lucky, you’ll also have a chance to see the orangutans swinging freely through the tropical rainforest. Up next, you’ll cross the river again and continue walking to the other start of the park where the jungle walk begins.
Enjoy the remarkable sights and sounds of the rainforest as you breathe its rich, life-giving air into your lungs. From the center viewpoint, you’ll head deeper into Gunung Leuser National Park to experience the rainforest in-depth, hiking on the undulating trail and spotting various wildlife in their natural habitat. This walk presents you with the opportunity to see gibbons, thomas leaf monkeys, longtail and pigtail macaques, flying squirrels, diverse birdlife and majestic orangutans!
As an optional add-on, you can spend the night camping in the jungle and enjoy another day of trekking following this. Please request more info at the time of booking.

Day 3 Discover Berastagi
This morning you’ll depart from Bukit Lawang to make the journey to beautiful Berastagi. The town of Berastagi offers a refreshing break from the heat of the jungle with its cool alpine climate. The surrounding fields produce a variety of flowers, fruit and vegetables. The landscape is dominated by two active volcanoes: Mount Sibayak and Mount Sinabung. On the way, stop at a local fruit market to enjoy a sweet natural treat.

Day 4 Climb Mt Sibayak and Transfer to Samosir
Today, a very special adventure awaits you on a 2172-meter-tall volcano, Mt Sibayak. Located close to Berastagi, it is one of the most easily accessible volcanoes in Indonesia and can be explored by anyone in reasonably good shape.
This morning you’ll be picked up from the hotel to transfer just half an hour to the beginning of the climb, before setting out on a one-hour walk to the top. Upon arrival at the crater, you’ll witness the misty sulphur puffing from the natural vents below.
Later, continue to Raja Berneh where you can soak your sore muscles in the hot springs before continuing with a transfer to Samosir Island for your overnight.

Day 5 Cycling on Samosir Island
Today you’ll discover the island paradise of Samosir on two wheels, cycling through the typical Batak roads of the island. Whiz past villages adorned with traditional houses and observe people at work in the rice fields. Today is a culturally immersive experience that you won’t forget!
